5 Poets and performances that inspired me

I have been an admirer of spoken word poetry and have also tried some myself . Here is a list of some of my favorite spoken word poetry videos from youtube. I have been inspired by many of them in some way or the other

1. Sarah Kay

I should probably write a full blog post on her, she is THE CELEBRITY for me. Have listened to her poems over and over again and admired the way she writes and the way she speaks. Her recitations and her cute expressions take the poem to a whole new level. She also has spoken on TED, presenting at number 1: Sarah Kay

2. Neelesh Misra

An Indian RJ, he mostly recites short stories. He has a golden voice ,perfect for voice overs .Just listen to one of his stories ,he will take you to a whole new world. He hosts a show called Yaadon ka Idiot Box , an Award-winning radio show ,on 92.7 BIG FM

3.Na Raindee Hai, Arieb Azhar, Coke Studio

This one poem is a  masterpiece. Mixing music with beautiful poetry can make the entire experience transcendental and this performance sure does that. Areib Azhar has a hypnotic voice and the music accompanying him makes it fit to be one of the greatest poetry recordings of all times. Listen to it in a loop, every play will show you a different side

4. Spoken Verses YouTube Channel:

This channel is run by a person who records poetry under the name Tom O’Bedlam. Again a deep golden voice. he records classic English poems by greats such as Yeats and Shakespear

Check out his channel

5.Farhan Akhtar: Zindagi na milegi Dobara

Possibly the most talented artist in Bollywood,  this man turns everything he touches to Gold. His poetry and recitation in the movie ZNMD was beyond excellence, inspired millions and should linger on with you for years to come

Here is a video with all the poetry in ZNMD

I know i have missed many many of them , might create another list soon. What are your favorite performances or poems?

  1. Thanks for the list, Madhur! Some awesome speakers and writers there!
I LOVE Sarah Kay’s style and Farhan Akhtar is undoubtedly wow. All the others were new for me but I enjoyed listening to them. 🙂
